Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state cannot be conducted until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is officially notified. The NRC update is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
Addressing discrepancies in the state’s voter lists, Sarma highlighted issues such as names of deceased persons, minors, and married women whose surnames or addresses have changed.
“The NRC has not been notified yet. Once that is done — hopefully by mid-next year — the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) can finally take place in Assam,” the Chief Minister said.
In the meantime, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed a Special Summary Revision to correct anomalies in the electoral rolls. As part of this exercise, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit households across Assam to collect updated information, including details of deceased voters, changes due to marriage or relocation, and other necessary corrections.
Sarma expressed confidence that these measures would ensure a cleaner and more accurate voter list ahead of the elections. He clarified that citizenship verification will not take place during the summary revision stage; it will only be addressed during the Special Intensive Revision process.
“The twin processes — the summary revision followed by the special intensive revision — will together help Assam achieve a more accurate electoral roll ahead of the polls,” he added.
