Assam Congress Banks on Alliance to Defeat BJP

Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Saturday asserted that the party, in alliance with five other opposition groups, is mounting a coordinated challenge in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, expressing confidence that a united anti-BJP vote could unseat the incumbent government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Speaking to ANI, Gogoi revealed that the Indian National Congress will contest 100 out of the 126 seats, as part of a six-party opposition alliance that includes Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dal, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference.

He emphasised that the alliance aims to prevent fragmentation of anti-BJP votes, which he believes is crucial to dislodging the current administration.

The Congress party has already accelerated its candidate selection process. On Friday, it released its fourth list comprising seven nominees, taking the total number of announced candidates to 94 for the 126-member Assembly. The list features several notable names, including former BJP leader Jayanta Borah, party spokesperson Bidisha Neog, Youth Congress figure Rohit Pariga, spokesperson Joy Prakash Das, along with Gyandip Mohan, Pran Kurmi, and Rahul.

As part of its seat-sharing arrangement, Congress has allotted 11 constituencies to its ally Raijor Dal. The agreement was formalised earlier this week during a joint press conference addressed by Gaurav Gogoi and Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi.

With the nomination deadline set for March 23, political activity has intensified across the state. A surge in filings is anticipated on the final day, as parties race to complete formalities for what is shaping up to be a closely contested electoral battle.
