Assam Forms SIT to Probe Zubeen Garg’s Death in Singapore

Assam police have constituted a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding singer Zubeen Garg’s death while swimming in Singapore on Sept 19. CID ADG MP Gupta will lead the SIT, which will have "full freedom to investigate," said CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

A second autopsy’s viscera samples will be examined at the Central Forensic Laboratory in New Delhi. Singapore authorities had issued a death certificate citing "drowning" as the cause.

Meanwhile, 55 FIRs have been registered against four individuals linked to the incident: Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore; Garg’s manager Siddharth Sarma; drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami; and businessman Sanjive Narain. The Assam government has blacklisted Mahanta and his associates from hosting events in the state and will seek to block any financial assistance for them from both state and central bodies.

Fans gathered outside Narain’s office in Guwahati as he denied all allegations. A PIL has been filed in Gauhati High Court seeking CBI investigation and court monitoring; it will be heard on Nov 10.

Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, vowed to complete his unfinished Assamese musical film, Roi Roi Binale, expressing faith in the government and legal system.
