Assam Govt Passed Muslim Marriage Registration Bill

In North East's Assam, the cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken an important decision. On Wednesday (August 21, 2024) that' the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024 was approved there.
Giving this information on the social media platform X, the CM said, "Today the Assam Cabinet has approved the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024. There are two special provisions in it: First- Now the government will register Muslim marriages and not the Qazi. Second- Registration of child marriage will be considered illegal."

Assam is currently ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The CM there was once in the Congress. However, he later turned to the BJP and since then he has been on the path of hardcore Hindutva. Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier said in early August that his government would make a law against 'love jihad', which would provide for 'life imprisonment' as punishment for the guilty.
During a press conference in Guwahati on August 4, 2024, the Assam CM had said that he had talked about 'love jihad' during the elections. Soon they will bring a law, in which life imprisonment will be given in such cases.
The CM had also told that a new domicile policy will be introduced soon, under which only people born in Assam will be eligible for government jobs in the state. In fact, the Assam government has given priority to local people in the one lakh government jobs provided as per the pre-poll promise.
