Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the state cabinet will take a formal decision on February 7 regarding the future course of action on the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report probing alleged links between Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting, Sarma said an informal discussion was held on the SIT findings, during which a detailed presentation was made before ministers.
“After seeing the presentation, many ministers were shocked by what came out. Some even remarked how the son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi could be involved in such matters,” Sarma claimed.
The chief minister said a formal memorandum will be placed before the cabinet on February 7 to determine whether the report will be forwarded to the Union Home Ministry for investigation by central agencies such as the NIA, RAW, or IB, or whether Assam Police will continue the probe.
“On February 8, we will close this chapter,” he asserted.
‘Sensitive and Shocking’ Findings to Be Made Public
Sarma described the SIT report as “extremely sensitive and shocking” and said the cabinet has authorised him to disclose the findings to the public to the maximum extent possible.
“Some classified inputs cannot be revealed, but most of the facts will be placed before the public,” he said, announcing that a special press conference will be held at 10:30 am on February 8.
He added that national media organisations from outside Assam would be facilitated to cover the briefing.
Allegations of Pakistan Links
The Assam CM alleged that the SIT has found “direct links” between Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn, and Pakistan.
According to Sarma, the investigation examined the alleged role of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who is accused of interfering in India’s internal affairs and having connections with Colburn.
“Sheikh is a Pakistani national, and the SIT has presented evidence showing direct links involving Gogoi and his wife,” Sarma claimed.
He said Colburn was questioned during the probe and that statements of 22–25 other individuals were also recorded.
Citizenship Remarks and Political Attack
Referring to the citizenship status of Gogoi’s family members, Sarma said, “There is one Indian and three foreigners in his family. If he had any shame, he would have ensured Indian citizenship for his children after this controversy emerged.”
He further alleged that Gogoi considers Indian citizenship “second-class” and places greater importance on British citizenship.
Earlier, Sarma and the BJP had accused Gogoi of acting as a “Pakistani agent” and alleged that Colburn had travelled multiple times between India and Pakistan and collected sensitive documents on behalf of Pakistani interests.
Gogoi’s Response
Hitting back, Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous, baseless, insane and nonsense,” and accused the chief minister of behaving like an “IT cell troll” instead of presenting facts.
