The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday resolved to contest the 2026 Assembly elections in alliance with its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners and set an ambitious target of winning 103 seats out of the 126-member House.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s core committee, its top policy-making body, held in Guwahati. The meeting was attended by BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santhosh, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state president Dilip Saikia, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior leaders.
Election Blueprint: Development + Ideology
According to a statement released after the meeting, the party will contest the next Assembly polls with a dual campaign plank:
-
All-round development achieved in Assam under the BJP government, and
-
Core ideological commitments, which have shaped the party’s policy direction in the state.
Before the core committee session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the newly appointed constituency coordinators and organisational in-charges for all 126 seats, outlining the communication strategy for highlighting government welfare initiatives and achievements among voters.
Sarma: Strong Measures on Polygamy, 'Love Jihad' and Land Encroachment
Sarma reiterated that the government would take strict steps on social and identity-linked issues, including:
-
Polygamy
-
‘Love Jihad’
-
‘Land Jihad’
He further stated that the government would take “tough action” against illegal encroachment of government, forest and tribal lands, especially by alleged encroachers from the Bengali-speaking Muslim community, including reserves and satra lands.
The chief minister added that the government aims to arrive at a “fair and widely accepted decision” regarding granting tribal status to six communities in the upcoming Assembly session.
Assessing Ground Strength and Booth Machinery
Santhosh, who arrived on a two-day organisational review, held multiple strategic meetings with party leadership and constituency-level leaders.
The assessment focused on:
-
The existing strength of BJP’s booth-level structure
-
Organizational preparedness for elections
-
Strategies to ensure maximum seat conversion, particularly in the core 103 constituencies the party prioritises
Santhosh directed officials to work towards a “100 per cent victory booth mission”, assigning goals, timelines and operational responsibilities to state-level coordinators.
Current Political Landscape
In the current Assembly, the NDA in Assam holds:
-
BJP – 64 MLAs
-
AGP – 9 MLAs
-
UPPL – 7 MLAs
-
BPF – 3 MLAs
Together, the alliance commands a comfortable majority, and the BJP leadership intends to expand this dominance in 2026.
Building a Public Narrative
Party sources said that Santhosh asked leaders to:
-
Strengthen public perception of governance success
-
Tap into grassroots mobilisation
-
Consolidate party messaging on ideological commitments
He also held closed-door meetings with state-level strategists including Dilip Saikia and Rabindra Raju to finalize micro-level execution plans ahead of the election calendar.
