Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a second post-mortem will be conducted on the body of singer Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore last Friday. This decision follows demands from sections of the state public.
The first autopsy in Singapore listed drowning as the cause of death.
An AIIMS doctor will be involved in the second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.
Afterward, Garg’s mortal remains will be taken to Sarusajai Stadium. The family has requested 85 people to accompany the body, and buses will be arranged.
The last rites will be conducted with full state honours between 9:30 am and 10 am.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent Union Minister Kiren Rijiju to represent the central government. CM Sarma, Assam Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a delegation from All Assam Students’ Union, and a Meghalaya government delegation will also attend. Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia has been invited.
CM Sarma urged traders to resume business from 2 pm Tuesday, warning of strict action against any attempt to forcibly shut down shops. Assam has been largely shut for the past three days.
Garg had traveled to Singapore for the 4th Northeast India Festival, which was canceled after his death.
The CID of Assam will investigate his death. So far, 54 FIRs have been filed against festival organizer Shaymkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddharth Sarma.
