Assam Unrest Turns Deadly, Two Die in Kheroni

Violence in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district escalated sharply on Tuesday evening, claiming the lives of two persons and deepening concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the region. The deceased have been identified as Deepak Dey and Saurabh Dey, officials confirmed, as unrest continued to grip the Kheroni area.

The fatalities mark a grave intensification of the turmoil that has plagued the region over the past several days, during which repeated incidents of arson, vandalism and clashes have been reported amid ongoing protests. Authorities described the situation as tense, with security forces placed on high alert to prevent further escalation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he is personally monitoring the evolving situation and expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives. In a statement posted on his official X handle, Sarma conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, calling the deaths “deeply painful.” He assured that the state government remains committed to restoring peace and stability in the affected areas.

The chief minister announced that additional security forces would be deployed in Kheroni on Wednesday as part of intensified measures to maintain law and order. He said the administration is maintaining constant communication with all stakeholders and is pursuing dialogue as the primary means to defuse tensions and restore normalcy.

Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, IPS, who has been stationed in the violence-hit area, appealed for calm and cooperation from protesters. Addressing the media, the DGP said security has been strengthened at sensitive locations, and senior police officers are engaging directly with agitating groups to prevent further unrest.

Warning of strict legal action, Singh said those involved in arson, violence and the killings would be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita remain in force across Kheroni and adjoining areas, with a heavy deployment of security personnel to curb unlawful gatherings.

Officials said while the situation remains volatile, it is under control, and sustained efforts through enhanced security and dialogue are underway to bring the region back to normalcy.
