Shockwaves hit Tripura politics on Monday as BJP MLA Yadav Lal Debnath walked free from one of the most talked-about scandals in the state Assembly — allegations that he was caught watching an indecent video during a session!
The Ethics Committee of the Assembly, led by Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Pal, cleared Debnath of wrongdoing and accepted his “unconditional apology.” The ruling BJP MLA had claimed that the “sexually provocative video” appeared on his mobile by accident and that he had “no technical knowledge” of how it was downloaded.
But here’s the twist: only four members of the nine-member committee signed the report — all BJP MLAs! CPI(M) legislators Nayan Sarkar and Ramu Das refused to sign, branding the report a farce. “How can it be unanimous when less than half the members signed it?” Sarkar thundered, calling the decision politically motivated.
The Opposition Leader Jitendra Chowdhury and other Left MLAs had earlier demanded strict action against Debnath after the shocking allegation surfaced last year. The video episode had embarrassed the ruling party, sparking uproar both inside and outside the House.
Now, with the clean chit handed down under Rules 277H(4) and 277(J), the BJP camp insists Debnath is innocent and the matter is “closed.” But the opposition is gearing up to make it a major political flashpoint, questioning whether the Assembly’s dignity has been compromised to shield one of its own.
Did Debnath really watch the video by mistake — or was the case quietly buried to save the government’s face? That’s the question shaking Tripura’s political corridors today
