Team India’s remarkable 10-match winning streak in T20 internationals came to an end after Australia defeated them by four wickets in the second match of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Chasing a modest target of 126, the hosts reached the total in just 13.2 overs, losing six wickets along the way. The loss marked India’s second-largest T20I defeat in terms of balls remaining, with 40 balls still unused when the match concluded.
This was also India’s first defeat with Shivam Dube in the playing XI since his T20 debut in 2019. Until now, the team had gone 37 matches unbeaten whenever Dube featured—an exceptional streak in international T20 cricket.
Abhishek Surpasses Kohli’s Record
Rising star Abhishek Sharma achieved a personal milestone by becoming the Indian batsman with the most runs after 25 T20I innings, amassing 936 runs. He surpassed Virat Kohli, who had scored 906 runs in his first 25 innings.
Adding to his accolades, Abhishek also scored 50+ runs in 25 balls or fewer for the seventh time in his career, joining England’s Phil Salt, who has matched this record. So far, Abhishek’s T20I career includes six half-centuries and two centuries—a testament to his explosive batting ability.
End of an Era for Dube’s Unbeaten Run
Since making his debut in 2019, Shivam Dube had been part of 37 unbeaten games for India. Prior to this loss, India’s only two defeats with him came in his early matches. Afterward, the team maintained an extraordinary run, including four tied matches won in Super Overs, one no result, and two rain-abandoned games.
Globally, Uganda’s Pascal Murungi follows Dube with 26 unbeaten matches, while Jasprit Bumrah stands third on the list with 24 wins in games he led.
Historical Context
Friday’s loss was India’s second-biggest defeat in T20Is in terms of balls remaining, after the 2008 Melbourne clash against Australia, where India lost with 58 balls to spare.
India’s last T20I defeat before this came on January 28, when England beat them by 26 runs. Since then, India had recorded nine consecutive victories and one draw, a streak that now comes to a halt.
