In a major policy shift ahead of Durga Puja, the Bangladesh government has announced a complete ban on fairs around puja mandaps this year. The decision, officials say, is aimed at curbing the gathering of anti-social elements who often exploit these festive spaces to consume cannabis and alcohol.
Home affairs adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed the move after a high-level preparatory meeting on Monday. “This time, fairs will not be permitted. One or two shops may be allowed, but only with the approval of puja celebration committees,” he told reporters.
The order is significant as Durga Puja is the largest festival for the Hindu minority community in Bangladesh, and fairs have traditionally been part of the celebrations in many districts. However, security agencies have long flagged concerns about the misuse of such gatherings.
Officials disclosed that around 33,000 mandaps will be set up across the country this year. To ensure foolproof security, the government has also rolled out a dedicated mobile application to help authorities track, monitor, and respond to emergencies during the festival.
Interestingly, puja committees have not raised objections to the ban. On the contrary, according to Chowdhury, they have expressed confidence that the festival will remain peaceful and joyous.
This decision underscores the government’s balancing act—ensuring religious freedom and celebration for Hindus while tightening security to prevent disruptions. With the new measures, all eyes will be on how the country’s biggest minority festival unfolds this year.
