Bangladesh Prefers India Over China to Implement Teesta River Project: Seikh Hasina

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has said that she will trust India over China for her country's big budget Teesta project. China is continuously showing interest in this project and is also ready to give loan to Bangladesh at a better interest rate.

This project has strategic importance for India, hence India is also showing interest in this project. The estimated cost of this project is around 1 billion dollars.

Teesta river is the only river left between India and Bangladesh on which the sharing of water has not been agreed upon due to the objection of the West Bengal government.

According to the Indian Constitution, the consent of the state government is necessary in such a situation. In 2011, a consensus was reached on this issue but Mamta Banerjee
opposed it and said that this will only lead to drought in the part of West Bengal.

The Teesta River Project is strategically important for India. The Teesta Project is close to India's Chicken Neck and China's presence in Bangladesh would be an uncomfortable situation for India.

Along with this, if this project goes to China, it will be easy for China to collect data about the flow of Teesta River water and the strategic area, which would not be good for India. Along with this, as soon as the project comes into its hands, China can also try to keep its soldiers close to the Siliguri Corridor Chicken Neck.

Sheikh Hasina had earlier come to India where PM Modi had shown his interest in this project. Along with this, many agreements were also signed between India and Bangladesh.

PM Hasina had also invited PM Modi to visit Bangladesh. After that PM Hasina also went on a visit to China, where she signed many agreements with China
