BCCI Approached Me For Head Coach Post of Team India: Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting has revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India had approached him for the post of head coach of Team India, but he is not ready for it yet.

However, his son wants him to take this responsibility. Ponting has worked with the Australian T20 and ODI teams.

During a conversation with ICC Review, Ponting said, 'I have seen many reports regarding the coach of Team India, in which it is being said that I will become the coach. Yes, I have discussed this face to face during IPL, so that I can know whether I am ready to take this post or not."

"I would love to become the coach of the national team, but if you work with the Indian team, you cannot join the IPL team. I am associated with Delhi Capitals. Apart from this, the job of head coach is for 10 or 11 months of the year. It doesn't fit into my lifestyle right now. My family and my children have spent the last five weeks with me at the IPL and they come every year" he said

"When I talked to my son about this, he said, 'Just accept it. We would love to go to India for the next few years. We like living in India and its culture. But I want to give my time to my family" said Ricky.

The board had released an advertisement for candidates late night on 13 April. The last date to apply for the post of head coach is 6 pm on 27 May. The tenure of the new head coach of Team India will be for all three formats for a period of three and a half years from July 2024 to December 2027.

Rahul Dravid was made the head coach of India in November 2021, when Team India was out of the group stage of the T-20 World Cup. The team again played the semi-finals in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Dravid's tenure was over after the ODI World Cup in 2023, but due to Team India reaching the final, his tenure was extended till the T20 World Cup.
