In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, Governor C. V. Ananda Bose has resigned from his post, nearly a month before the state heads to the polls. Following his resignation, R. N. Ravi, the current Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of overseeing the Raj Bhavan in West Bengal.
At the same time, Kavindra Gupta has also stepped down as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Sources confirmed that Bose has formally submitted his resignation to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and is presently in New Delhi.
Reacting to the sudden development, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed surprise over the decision. She stated that the Union Home Minister had informed her about the appointment of R.N. Ravi as the Governor of West Bengal but alleged that the state government had not been consulted in the process.
“This decision has been taken unilaterally by the central government without any discussion with the state administration,” Banerjee remarked, indicating her displeasure over the move.
C. V. Ananda Bose had assumed office as the Governor of West Bengal on November 23, 2022, while Kavindra Gupta took charge as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on July 18, 2025.
During Bose’s tenure in West Bengal, the relationship between the Raj Bhavan and the state government was often marked by friction. Differences frequently surfaced between the Governor’s office and the administration led by Mamata Banerjee, particularly over issues such as university appointments, administrative interventions, and several constitutional matters.
The sudden resignation of the Governor just weeks before the crucial elections is expected to intensify political debate in the state, with opposition parties and political observers closely watching the developments.
