Marking a historic milestone in the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Anand turned into a vibrant parade ground on Wednesday as Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha jointly led a grand Unity March. The event was part of a statewide commemoration marking 150 years of the birth of the nation’s iconic unifier.

The atmosphere in Anand brimmed with energy as schoolchildren, public representatives, NSS volunteers, and local residents walked shoulder-to-shoulder, celebrating Patel’s monumental contribution to integrating a diverse India into one nation. Before the procession began, both Chief Ministers offered floral tributes at a memorial dedicated to the ‘Iron Man of India’.
Joining the march as a special guest, Tripura CM Manik Saha noted that Sardar Patel’s vision was not confined to any single region. “His ideals bind the entire nation even today,” he said, describing Patel’s leadership as a compass that continues guiding India’s democratic journey.

Alongside the march, cultural programmes, thematic exhibitions, and public awareness activities were held across Anand, providing participants—especially students—with insights into Patel’s role in shaping modern India. The march wound its way through the town’s prominent routes, echoing chants of unity and national harmony.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote an open letter to the nation, underscoring how the Constitution has empowered citizens from the most modest backgrounds to rise to the country’s highest positions. Paying homage to the members of the Constituent Assembly, including Dr Rajendra Prasad, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and several influential women members, the Prime Minister called their work the “foundation of India’s democratic soul.”

Looking ahead to 2049, the centenary year of the Constitution’s adoption, the Prime Minister urged citizens to strengthen democracy through a sense of duty and active participation, particularly by exercising their right to vote. He also suggested that educational institutions honour first-time voters to inspire a stronger commitment to democratic values among the youth.
