Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on March 17 that the seat-sharing arrangement within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the forthcoming Assam Assembly Elections 2026 has been largely finalised. Under the proposed formula, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is expected to contest 26 constituencies, while the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) will field candidates in 11 seats. The remaining constituencies will be contested by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Addressing the media after a high-level meeting in New Delhi, Sarma stated that deliberations centred on consolidating the alliance framework among the BJP and its regional partners, alongside preliminary discussions on candidate selection.
He further revealed that the BJP’s Central Parliamentary Board is scheduled to convene at 7 PM on Wednesday to formalise the party’s candidate list, which is likely to be released either later that night or early the following morning.
Indicating a strategic recalibration, Sarma noted that the BJP is expected to introduce several new faces, with a particular emphasis on enhancing the representation of women and younger leaders. He also acknowledged that a few incumbent legislators may be denied renomination due to the recent delimitation exercise, which has altered constituency boundaries.
The development underscores that the ruling alliance has entered the decisive phase of its electoral preparations, with candidate announcements imminent as Assam gears up for a closely contested election.
