The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura on Tuesday unveiled its candidates for all 28 seats of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with elections scheduled for April 12.
The announcement came a day after Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, supremo of the Tipra Motha Party, reiterated his party’s unwillingness to forge alliances without firm assurances on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord.
The TTAADC governs nearly 70 per cent of Tripura’s geographical area, making the الانتخابات strategically significant.
State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee stated that the party has opted to contest all 28 constituencies independently. Seven incumbent members have been renominated, while fresh faces have been introduced in Machamara and Manu–Chailengta.
Notably, former Tipra Motha leaders Ananta Debbarma and Rajesh Debbarma, who recently defected to the BJP, have been fielded as candidates.
Bhattacharjee further revealed that despite the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) unilaterally announcing nominees for nine seats, the BJP made efforts to negotiate a seat-sharing arrangement. However, talks failed to yield a consensus. Similar discussions with the Tipra Motha Party also did not culminate in an alliance, prompting the BJP to go solo in the elections.
On the prospect of a post-poll alliance, Chief Minister Manik Saha remained non-committal, remarking that future political alignments remain uncertain.
Although both the Tipra Motha Party and the IPFT are part of the BJP-led coalition government in the state, the BJP currently sits in the opposition within the tribal council, which is governed by Tipra Motha.
Saha emphasised that development would be the BJP’s central campaign theme, highlighting the government’s initiatives aimed at the welfare of indigenous communities.
The deadline for filing nominations is March 25, while vote counting is scheduled for April 17.
In the previous election, the Tipra Motha Party secured 18 seats, whereas the BJP won nine seats out of the 12 it contested. Additionally, two members of the council are nominated by the Governor.
