BJP Trains Guns on Tipra Motha, Accuses Ally of Duplicity and Political Posturing

In a dramatic escalation of tensions within Tripura’s ruling alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday unleashed a blistering critique of its junior partner, the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), accusing it of political duplicity, deliberate obfuscation, and resorting to populist theatrics aimed at manipulating public sentiment.

Speaking to reporters in Agartala, senior BJP leader and former MP Rebati Tripura lampooned TMP’s recent rhetoric at the highly publicized One North East rally, calling it “yet another calibrated manoeuvre to mislead impressionable voters.” He alleged that the party’s shifting ideological positions reveal a deeper strategic inconsistency.

According to Rebati Tripura, the TMP’s demands for a “constitutional solution” for indigenous communities often stand at odds with its leaders’ incendiary remarks in the TTAADC areas. He noted that while the TTAADC is a constitutional body, it continues to “flout basic norms of financial transparency,” citing a letter from the Comptroller and Auditor General highlighting alleged irregularities.

“The party that governs the TTAADC appears entirely indifferent to transparency and accountability. Their leaders openly threaten other political outfits for expanding activities in ADC areas, yet they evade scrutiny of their own governance,” he said, calling the behaviour “self-contradictory and deeply suspicious.”

Slogans Losing Steam? BJP Detects TMP’s Waning Mobilizing Power

Sharpening his critique, Rebati Tripura argued that TMP’s once-electric slogan of Greater Tipraland has now “evaporated from their political dictionary.” The One North East initiative, he alleged, is a hollow attempt by a handful of leaders to regain waning relevance.

“It is increasingly difficult for the Tipra Motha to revive its earlier mass appeal—the slogans that once energized communities have palpably lost traction,” he remarked.

He further warned that several speeches delivered at the Agartala rally carried “provocative undertones,” reflecting what he called “a sinister blueprint to exploit ethnic fissures and potentially foment unrest.”

Contradictions Within TMP Leadership

The BJP leader also underscored contradictory narratives within TMP’s top brass. “Minister Animesh Debbarma openly claims the raison d’être of a regional party is to resist national parties, while Pradyot Kishore Debbarman offers a diametrically opposite perspective,” he observed. Such ideological incoherence, he suggested, signals a deeper credibility crisis inside the TMP leadership.

He additionally condemned the party’s decision to publicly welcome former militant Utpal Debbarma, calling it “politically irresponsible and symbolically perilous.”

BJP Vice President Targets Meghalaya CM Over 125th Amendment Delays

At the same press briefing, BJP’s state vice president Bimal Chakma took aim at Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for what he termed an “inexplicable obstruction” to the passage of the long-awaited 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill.

“Tripura has already endorsed every recommendation of the amendment,” Chakma said. “But Meghalaya has opposed the creation of elected rural bodies in Sixth Schedule areas, choosing instead to preserve its unelected Darbar institutions. Yet, paradoxically, the same leadership arrives in Tripura to demand its early implementation.”

Calling the stance “hypocritical and politically opportunistic,” he argued that Meghalaya’s opposition has significantly slowed the amendment’s progress at the national level.
