The body of 19-year-old Sneha Debnath, a Delhi University student, was recovered from the Yamuna river on Sunday evening. Sneha was originally from Sabroom in Tripura and lived in the Paryavaran Complex area in Mehrauli, South Delhi.
She was missing since the morning of July 7. Sneha's body was found in the river under the Geeta Colony flyover on Sunday evening. Sneha's family has identified her body. The body has been sent for postmortem. A case has been registered in this matter at the Mehrauli police station.
According to South Delhi DCP Ankit Chauhan, Sneha was a B.Sc student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College of Delhi University. A family friend told news agency PTI that Sneha last called her mother at 5.56 am on July 7.
Sneha had said that she would go to Sarai Rohilla railway station to meet a friend. Then her phone was switched off. When Sneha's family called her friend, she told them that Sneha did not come to meet them.
During the investigation, Sneha's last location was found to be at the Signature Bridge at Majnu Ka Tila. During interrogation, a cab driver told that he had dropped Sneha at the Signature Bridge on July 7.
Some people told that they had seen a girl standing on the bridge. Since then NDRF and local police were searching for Sneha in Yamuna river from Delhi to Noida.
Police said that they have found a suicide note from Sneha's room in Delhi, which was written by her hand. It read- I consider myself a failure and a burden. I could no longer bear to live like this. I have decided to commit suicide by jumping from the Signature Bridge. No one is at fault in this, this is my own decision.
Sneha was the daughter of retired Subedar Major Lieutenant Pritish Debnath. Sneha's father is suffering from chronic kidney failure and is being treated through dialysis.
According to news agency PTI, Sneha's close friends said that Sneha was a promising and ambitious girl. But she was upset for the last few months. She had also sent emails and messages to her friends on the morning of July 7.
A family friend said that Sneha had not withdrawn money from her bank account for the last four months. After calling her mother on July 7, she left the house without taking any belongings with her.
Sneha's family and friends alleged that none of the CCTV cameras in and around the Signature Bridge were functional on the day of the incident. The family said in a statement that suicides are a common occurrence on the Signature Bridge. Despite this, not a single CCTV camera on the bridge or in the surrounding areas was functional.
The family said, 'This is not just Sneha's case. This is a matter of safety of every student and citizen coming to Delhi. This bridge comes under the area of 4-5 different police stations. Due to this, everyone avoids taking responsibility.'
