Senior Assam leader Bhupen Kumar Borah held a high-profile meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Assam State Guest House, Koinadhara ahead of his formal induction into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), signalling a consequential realignment in Assam’s political landscape.
Addressing the media following the interaction, Borah conveyed his appreciation to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for orchestrating the meeting. He underscored that the Chief Minister not only facilitated the engagement but also extended a rare personal courtesy by visiting his residence prior to the discussion.
“I am grateful to the Chief Minister for affording me the opportunity to meet the Home Minister,” Borah stated. He further observed that before he could formally introduce himself, Sarma presented him to Amit Shah as “the son of a teacher”—a gesture Borah described as profoundly moving and emblematic of personal respect in public life.
Reflecting on his exchange with Shah, Borah candidly acknowledged that his earlier perceptions of the Union Home Minister had been misplaced. “My previous understanding of Amit Shah was erroneous. Under his stewardship, Assam remains secure and stable,” he remarked.
Recounting his political trajectory, Borah noted his 32-year-long association with the Indian National Congress, emphasising that he hails from a third-generation Congress family. Nevertheless, he said the respect, outreach, and political assurance demonstrated by the Chief Minister over the past 32 hours—including the visit to his home and the arrangement of the meeting—instilled in him the conviction that his decision was both timely and judicious.
The meeting at Koinadhara has drawn widespread attention across political circles, with Borah’s impending entry into the BJP expected to carry substantial ramifications for Assam’s evolving political equilibrium.
