Border Tension as BGB Halts Road Work in Kailashahar

Tension flared along the India–Bangladesh border on Monday after bricklaying work on an old access road near the crematorium along the Manu River was allegedly halted by personnel of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The incident occurred in Ward No. 9 of the Kailashahar Municipal Council area, close to the Manu Land Customs Station.

According to local sources, construction work was underway when BGB personnel intervened, asserting that under border regulations, no construction activity—including bricklaying—is permitted within 150 yards of the international boundary. The BGB reportedly issued warnings to the Border Security Force (BSF), following which the contractor was compelled to suspend the work.

With labourers withdrawn from the site, the roadwork came to a complete standstill, causing immediate hardship to local residents. The disruption directly affected families taking bodies to the nearby crematorium, who were forced to endure severe difficulties due to the unfinished and inaccessible road.

Contractor Abdul Mannan stated that the project, which had remained stalled for a prolonged period, was resumed on Monday following instructions from the local administration. However, the work had to be halted shortly thereafter due to objections raised by the BGB. He said the matter has been formally reported to the administration.

The incident has heightened tension in the surrounding border areas, prompting close monitoring by both security forces. While the situation remains under control at present, the developments have drawn the attention of the district administration.

Officials indicated that the issue is under active consideration and is likely to be discussed at a high-level meeting. The next course of action by the administration and the BSF is awaited, as residents hope for a resolution that restores access to the crematorium without further escalation.
