BSF Shoots Man Attempting to Cross Indo-Bangla Border in Tripura

In a dramatic security incident along the Indo-Bangladesh border, a 25-year-old man identified as Akash Das sustained gunshot injuries after Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened non-lethal fire as he allegedly attempted to cross the international boundary in North Tripura on Monday.

According to BSF sources, Das, who has been living in India for nearly five years, was trying to scale the border fence to reach Bangladesh when a patrol team detected his movement. Despite repeated warnings, he allegedly refused to stop, prompting jawans to fire pump-action guns authorized for non-lethal response in such circumstances.

A senior BSF officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:

“Our information suggests the youth originally belongs to Bangladesh and had crossed into India years ago. His father has since passed away and we are unaware of his mother’s whereabouts. He was attempting to slip back across the border when he ignored verbal warnings. The jawans fired only after all other measures failed.”

The bullet reportedly struck Das in the abdomen. BSF personnel immediately evacuated him to a local healthcare facility, where doctors administered primary treatment before referring him to Agartala’s Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital for advanced care.

Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, Avinash Rai, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway.

“He was attempting to cross the boundary wire. We are still waiting for documents to verify his nationality. A case will be registered once the formal complaint from BSF is received,” the SP told reporters.

Tripura, which shares 856 km of land and riverine border with Bangladesh, remains one of the most sensitive frontier regions in the Northeast. Though much of the border is fenced, several patches remain open due to pending land and local issues, making illegal crossings a recurring challenge for security agencies.

Monday’s encounter has once again highlighted the complex human realities — family roots on either side of the border, unresolved identities, economic pressures — that continue to drive risky undocumented movement across one of the region’s most tightly patrolled boundaries.
