By-Elections In 5 Assembly Seats In 4 States, Today

Voting has started on Thursday for 5 assembly seats in 4 states of the country. These include 2 seats from Gujarat, 1 seat each from Punjab-Kerala and West Bengal.
The result to be announced on June 23. Voting will be held on these seats from 7 am to 6 pm.
In Gujarat and Punjab, there is a triangular contest between Congress, BJP and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In Bengal, Congress-Left are contesting the elections together. Whereas, in Kerala, they are in the fray against each other.
Reasons for by-elections on assembly seats
1. Gujarat: 2 seats
Kadi: BJP MLA Karsanbhai Punjabbhai Solanki passed away in February this year, due to which this seat fell vacant.
Visavadar: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai Bhayani resigned from the post on 13 December 2023. He joined the BJP. Since then this seat is vacant. In the year 2022, BJP's defeated candidate Harshad Ribadia challenged Bhayani's victory in the Gujarat High Court. In March, Harshad withdrew his petition, after which the way for the by-election was cleared. AAP has fielded Gopal Italia as its candidate in the by-election. Congress and AAP are in alliance. Kirit Patel is the candidate from BJP.
2. Punjab: one seat
Ludhiana West: AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi died in January this year. Since then this seat is vacant. A total of 14 candidates are contesting on this seat. AAP has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate. He has been a Rajya Sabha MP since 2022. Congress has fielded its former minister and Punjab Congress Working President Bharat Bhushan Ashu. Ashu has been the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies in the previous Congress government. BJP has fielded Jeevan Gupta as its candidate. He is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. He has previously been the state general secretary of the party.
3. West Bengal: one seat
Kaliganj: TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed died of a heart attack on 2 February 2025. Since then this seat is vacant. TMC has declared Nasiruddin Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as its candidate. BJP has fielded local panchayat member and former Mandal president Ashish Ghosh. Congress has fielded Kabil Uddin Sheikh as its candidate. CPI (M) has supported Kabil.
4. Kerala: one seat
Nilambur: In 2021, PV Anwar was elected MLA as an independent candidate with the support of the Left Democratic Front (LDF). In September 2024, Anwar resigned on 13 January 2025 due to differences between Kerala CM Vijayan and LDF. After this he joined TMC. In the by-election, PV Anwar from TMC, Aryadan Shaukat from Congress, M. Swaraj from CPI(M) and Michael George from BJP are the candidates.
Government In These States:
Gujarat: There is a BJP government here. Bhupendra Patel is the CM. There are 182 total assembly seats. The BJP has 161 MLAs, the Congress has 12 and the AAP has four. While one seat is with the Samajwadi Party and two are with independents.
West Bengal: There is a Trinamool Congress government in the state. Mamata Banerjee is the CM. There are 294 seats in the total assembly. TMC has 215 MLAs. BJP has 77 seats. Congress has no MLA.
Punjab: There is a government of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here. Bhagwant Mann is the CM. There are 117 total assembly seats. AAP has 91 seats. Congress has 18 seats, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has 3 seats, BSP has 1 and BJP has 2 seats. One MLA is independent.
Kerala: There is a Left Democratic Front (LDF) government here. Pinarayi Vijayan is the CM. Total assembly seats are 140. LDF has 98 seats. United Democratic Front (UDF) has 41 seats.
