CBI Probe in Sandeshkhali Case: SC Rejects Bengal Govt Plea Challenging HC Order

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the West Bengal government's petition challenging a Calcutta High Court order which had directed a CBI probe into allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan said, "Why should the state be interested in protecting someone?"

He said in the last hearing, when the apex court had asked this specific question, the state government's counsel had said that the matter be adjourned

"Thank you...the petition is dismissed," the bench said, which was hearing a plea filed by the state government challenging the April 10 order of the Calcutta High Court.

While hearing the petition on April 29, the Supreme Court had asked the West Bengal government that why is the state coming forward as a petitioner to save the interests of some people from the private sector?

The state government, in its
petition in the apex court, had said that the High Court order had weakened the morale of the entire machinery of the state, including the police force.

The CBI is already investigating the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali and has registered three FIRs related to the January 5 incidents.

Stating that the probe will be monitored by the court, the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to file a report on the alleged illegal conversion of agricultural land into water bodies for pisciculture after conducting a thorough scrutiny of revenue records and physical inspection of the alleged land.

The high court also directed the CBI to investigate the allegations of crimes against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali and submit a comprehensive report on the next date of hearing
