Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the 72nd Plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Agartala, emphasized the Indian government's commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in Northeast India. He highlighted that following the Bangladesh Enclaves Exchange, efforts are underway to link the Northeast with global markets, aiming to strengthen the region's industrial ecosystem and attract investors.
Shah noted that over the past decade, more than 20 agreements have been signed, leading to the reintegration of over 9,000 youths into mainstream society, contributing to the restoration of peace in the region. He also mentioned that the "Asthalaxmi" concept introduced by Prime Minister Modi has been embraced nationwide, reflecting a collective desire for the prosperity of the Northeast.
The Home Minister underscored the region's potential, stating that products from the Northeast now have access to global markets via the Chittagong port. He envisioned Northeast India becoming a gateway for economic development and a bridge of trust for the entire country. Additionally, Shah called for a cultural shift within the police forces of the Northeast, advocating for a focus on ensuring citizens receive their rightful entitlements in the prevailing peaceful environment. He urged governors to oversee the implementation of new laws to build public confidence in the justice system.
These initiatives align with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region's ongoing projects to improve connectivity, including the development of road, rail, air, and waterway networks, as well as power and tourism infrastructure. Significant projects include the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, which aim to integrate the Northeast with neighboring countries and beyond.
The government's focus on the Northeast is part of a broader strategy to leverage the region's unique position as a corridor linking India to Southeast Asia, thereby enhancing trade, cultural exchange, and regional development
