The Union government on Friday extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in parts of Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh for another six months, maintaining the same scope of “disturbed areas” as in its previous notification.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that after reviewing the security situation, areas earlier classified as disturbed will continue to remain so until March 31, 2026.
Manipur: AFSPA will cover the entire state except 13 police station areas across five districts — Imphal West (Imphal, Lamphel, City, Singjamei, Patsoi, Wangoi), Imphal East (Porompat, Heingang, Irilbung), Thoubal (Thoubal), Bishnupur (Bishnupur, Nambol) and Kakching (Kakching).
Arunachal Pradesh: The Act will continue to be in force in Tirap, Changlang, Longding districts, and areas under Namsai, Mahadevpur and Chowkham police stations in Namsai district.
Nagaland: AFSPA will apply in Dimapur, Niuland, Chumoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren, and Meluri districts. It also extends to select police station jurisdictions in Kohima, Mokokchung, Longleng, Wokha, and Zunheboto districts.
The Centre had last renewed AFSPA in these states six months ago. The law grants special powers to the armed forces to aid civil administration in counter-insurgency operations in disturbed areas.
