Centre Issued Clarification On The Documents For Citizenship Under CAA

The central government has issued clarification on the documents required for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

To obtain citizenship under this law, it is necessary to present documents that prove that the applicant's parents, grandparents, or great grandparents were residents of Pakistan, Afghanistan or Bangladesh.

However, it was not decided what kind of documents would be required for its proof. In the new notification, it has been clarified that any order issued by the Central Government, State Government or any judicial body such as land records, judicial orders etc will be valid for this.

The central government implemented CAA across the country on 11 March 2024. Under CAA, there is a provision to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees who came from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan before 31 December 2014. For the first time in May this year, 14 people were given Indian citizenship under CAA.

3 big things about Citizenship Amendment Act...

1. Who gets citizenship: Citizenship can be given to people of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh after being persecuted on religious grounds before 31 December 2014. Only people from these three countries can apply for citizenship.

2. Impact on Indian citizens: CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens. Indians have the right to citizenship under the Constitution. CAA or any law cannot take it away.

3. How to apply: Under CAA, the application for citizenship has to be made online. The applicant has to tell when he came to India. You can apply even if you do not have a passport or other travel documents. Under this, the period of stay in India has been kept more than 5 years. Apart from this law, this period is more than 11 years to acquire citizenship.
