Centre Notifies 108 Immigration Posts; NE, Incl. Tripura, Set As Key Gateway

In a landmark step to strengthen border management and streamline international movement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially designated 108 immigration posts across the country as notified entry and exit points for foreign travelers. The list covers 37 airports, 34 sea and river ports, 37 land border checkposts, and 6 railway stations, marking one of the most comprehensive reforms in India’s immigration framework.

As many as eight landports in Tripura at Agartala, Dhalaighat, Khowal, Muhurighat, Ragna, Kailashahar, Sabroom and Srimantapur have been declared as designated immigration posts for entry and exit of international passengers.

Significantly, the Northeast region has emerged as a crucial hub in this overhaul, with 23 immigration posts — spanning Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura. Among them, Tripura has gained prominence as a strategic gateway for international connectivity, particularly with Bangladesh.

Officials said the move is expected to boost cross-border trade, tourism, and people-to-people contact, besides reinforcing India’s Act East Policy. Tripura’s Akhaura Integrated Check Post, already a vital link for passenger and goods movement with Bangladesh, now assumes greater strategic weight with official immigration status.

Security experts highlighted that enhanced immigration facilities will help curb illegal movement and ensure faster clearances, while local trade bodies have welcomed the notification, calling it a “game changer” for the Northeast economy.

By positioning the region as a frontline for cross-border exchanges, the Centre aims to transform the Northeast — once seen as a peripheral zone — into a bridge between India and Southeast Asia.
