China claims some parts of the waterway as its own, which is also claimed by the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam. Trade worth $3 trillion passes through this part of the waterway every year.
The area is said to be rich in oil, natural gas reserves as well as fish stocks. In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration found that China's claim has no legal standing. However, this was rejected by Beijing.
Philippine Coast Guard spokesman Jay Tarriela showed videos of Saturday's collision in a press briefing. He said that the Chinese Coast Guard Ship 5205 directly and deliberately hit the Philippine vessel without any provocation.
He said that the collision damaged the Teresa Magbanua, one of the largest Philippines coast guard ships. Its length is 97 meters. No personnel were injured in this. The Chinese Coast Guard has been accused of attacking.
China Coast Guard spokesman Liu Dejun said in a statement that a Philippine ship illegally stranded on the shore had lifted anchor and deliberately rammed a Chinese ship.
He called on the Philippines to immediately withdraw or face consequences. Liu said, 'The Chinese Coast Guard will take necessary measures to firmly thwart all acts of provocation and violation and safeguard the country's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.' Tariela said the Philippines would not withdraw its ship despite increasing harassment or threats from the Chinese coast guard. The Philippines deployed a ship at Sabina Shoal, 75 nautical miles from Palawan, in April
