Clashes between the Tangkhul and Kuki communities erupted in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday evening, February 8, compelling the district administration to impose prohibitory orders amid escalating tensions, officials said.
The confrontation unfolded at Litan village, where rival groups engaged in sustained stone pelting, prompting security forces to intervene and deploy tear gas to restore order. Reports of multiple rounds of firing further intensified the volatile situation.
In view of the deteriorating law and order scenario, Ukhrul District Magistrate Asish Das invoked Sub-Section (1) of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, citing an imminent threat to public peace and tranquillity.
The prohibitory order, effective from 7 pm on February 8 until further notice, restricts public movement and prohibits any activity likely to disturb public order within the notified areas. Government officials and security personnel have been exempted from the restrictions.
The district administration noted that tensions had been simmering since Saturday night following the alleged assault of a member of the Tangkhul community by a group of seven to eight individuals at Litan village. The matter was initially addressed through dialogue between the victim’s family and the village chief of Litan Sarelkhong, with both parties agreeing to pursue a resolution in accordance with customary practices. A meeting was scheduled for Sunday.
However, the meeting reportedly failed to materialize after the victim’s family did not attend. Subsequently, a group from the nearby Saibung village allegedly attacked the residence of the Litan Sarelkhong chief.
Officials further stated that while withdrawing from the area, the assailants allegedly discharged seven rounds while passing near the Litan police station.
Security forces have since been deployed in strength to prevent further unrest, and the situation remains under constant surveillance, officials added.
