CM Dr Saha Chairs Meet to Promote NE Tourism Sector

A meeting of the High-Level Task Force on Tourism Development in the North Eastern States, convened by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, was held today at the Tripura Institution for Transformation (TIT) office conference hall.

The meeting was presided over by the Union Minister of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, and attended virtually by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, and the Chief Ministers of several other North Eastern states.

During the meeting, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma presented a detailed draft report outlining strategies and potential areas for the growth of tourism in the region.

Participating in the discussion, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said that Tripura’s tourism sector has witnessed significant progress in recent years. He highlighted various state initiatives aimed at boosting eco, cultural, and heritage tourism, and noted that the draft report offered a comprehensive roadmap for regional collaboration in tourism development.

“Tourism holds immense potential to generate both employment and revenue,” Dr. Saha stated. He emphasized the need to promote cultural and religious tourism across the North Eastern states, strengthen connectivity and infrastructure, attract investment, and ensure tourist safety and hospitality.

Speaking on the occasion, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recalled that a similar draft report on trade development in the North East had earlier been presented under the chairmanship of Dr. Saha. He stressed that the states should plan tourism development with a national and global perspective in mind, rather than focusing solely on their individual regions.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat underlined the vital role of tourism in strengthening both the national and global economy. He urged the Chief Ministers of all North Eastern states to take proactive measures to promote their respective destinations, saying, “Developing tourism is key to increasing a state’s global visibility and generating employment.”

Present at the meeting in Agartala were Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. P.K. Chakraborty, Planning Department Secretary L.T. Darlong, Tourism Department Secretary U.K. Chakma, Tourism Director Prashant Badal Negi, and other senior officials.
