CM Himanta Spreading Lies, Creating Divide: Danish Ali

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday claimed that the state will be Muslim-majority by 2041 and said the Muslim population is increasing by about 30 per cent every 10 years.

Sarma told that according to "statistical sampling", Muslims now constitute 40 per cent of Assam's population.

Assam CM told, "Increase in the population of Muslims in Assam is a statistical fact. The population growth rate of Muslims is much higher than that of Hindus and at this rate they will become a majority by 2041."

He told, "There has been a growth of 16 percent in the Hindu population. In 2011, the number of Muslims in Assam's population was 1.4 crore. Every 10 years, the Muslim population is growing by 30 percent. Every decade, the Muslim population is increasing by 16 percent more than the Hindu population. Every decade, the Muslim population is increasing by 22 lakhs."

On the other hand Congress leader and former MP Danish Ali reacted sharply to Sarma's remarks and accused the Chief Minister of spreading lies and creating division among the people.

Citing census data, Ali said that the Muslim population in Assam was about 25 percent in 1951 and 34.22 percent in 2011.

Danish Ali said, "On the basis of 1951, the then Assam was a unified state, that is, four more states were created from it. Now it is obvious that in these states the non-Muslim population was in majority, hence an increase in the Muslim population was seen in comparison to that."

Ali took a dig at Sarma, saying, "I would seriously recommend that if anyone should get the biggest award for lying in our country, it is the Chief Minister of Assam."

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi reminded Sarma of his own track record. Referring to the Lok Sabha election campaign, Gogoi said Sarma was seen "dancing and singing" in minority-dominated areas of Assam just two months ago. "Clearly population was not a factor then. Unfortunately the BJP has no answer to the 2024 verdict. The people of India have rejected the politics of mangalsutra and temple," Gogoi tweeted
