CM Lays Foundation for New Dental College Building

Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Thursday described the establishment of Tripura’s only government dental college as a historic achievement, fulfilling the long-cherished aspirations of the people of the state.

Addressing the third Foundation Day celebration of Agartala Government Dental College at Muktadhara Auditorium, the Chief Minister said the institution has rapidly emerged as a significant centre for education, medical training, and public healthcare within a short span of time.

On the occasion, Dr. Saha also inaugurated the earthquake-resistant renovation and restoration work of the historic old I.G.M. Hospital building. Later, he laid the foundation stone for the new buildings of Agartala Government Dental College and I.G.M. Hospital.

Recalling the journey of the institution, the Chief Minister said the dental college was established in 2023 under the present state government. He credited the positive initiatives of the Tripura government and the continuous support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the swift progress of the institution.

“Students of the state are now getting opportunities for advanced dental education within Tripura, while the people are benefiting from improved and modern dental healthcare services,” he said.

Dr. Saha noted that no previous government had succeeded in establishing a dental college in such a short time.

“Keeping in mind public needs, the future of students, and the strengthening of the healthcare system, this government completed the task with commitment and speed. Today, the college is being appreciated across the country,” he added.

The Chief Minister further informed that the college began offering the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course in the academic year 2023–24 with 50 seats, which has now been increased to 63.

Highlighting the state’s broader development agenda, Dr. Saha said the Tripura government is continuously focusing on infrastructure development and systemic reforms. While the old I.G.M. Hospital will undergo modernization, its historical heritage will be preserved, he assured.

Emphasizing the importance of ethics in healthcare, the Chief Minister said medical services must be free from discrimination and accessible to all sections of society. “Doctors carry immense responsibility toward society and must always work with a spirit of service,” he stated.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare, education, and legal infrastructure across the state.

Among those present at the programme were Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Principal of Agartala Government Dental College Dr. Shalu Rai, Director of Health Services Debashree Debbarma, Director of Medical Education H.P. Sharma, Director of Family Welfare and Disease Prevention Anjan Das, and State Health Mission Director Saju Wahid A.
