CM Manik Saha lays foundation for Shija Superspeciality Hospital

In a bid to boost healthcare services across Tripura, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, himself a maxillofacial surgeon, urged doctors to constantly upgrade their medical expertise to meet the growing demand for super-speciality care.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony for Shija Superspeciality Hospital at RK Nagar on the outskirts of Agartala, Saha said, “The responsibility of those associated with healthcare is immense. Even after launching nine super-speciality services at GBP Hospital with an investment of ₹250 crore, many patients still have to go outside the state for treatment. Upgrading skills is vital to strengthen our healthcare system.”

The Chief Minister highlighted that Shija Hospital’s successful kidney transplant procedures in Tripura had significantly boosted confidence in local medical capabilities.

Spread across 28 acres of government-leased land, the upcoming hospital — being developed by a Manipur-based healthcare group — will play a pivotal role in transforming the state’s medical landscape. Addressing criticism over land allocation, Saha said the decision was driven by the state’s long-term goal of developing cutting-edge healthcare facilities.

Saha also revealed that the hospital authorities plan to set up a medical college in Tripura, with the overall project involving an investment of around ₹900 crore.

The Chief Minister further shared his recent experience as keynote speaker at the National Forensic Sciences University in Ahmedabad, where he proposed introducing forensic odontology in Tripura’s forensic sciences curriculum — a field crucial in identifying victims during disasters.

Drawing parallels with Gujarat’s development model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Saha stated that Tripura, too, was focusing on infrastructure, agriculture, and connectivity to ensure inclusive growth for both tribal and non-tribal communities.
