The Tripura government has stepped up efforts to empower specially-abled citizens, issuing 41,812 unique identity cards through eight District Disability Rehabilitation Centres across the state, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced on Saturday.
Speaking at a state-level program at the Muktadhara auditorium in Agartala, the Chief Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to achieving 100 per cent identification of Divyang persons. “We are determined to bring every specially-abled individual under the ambit of social pensions and involve them in productive activities that ensure self-reliance,” he said.
At present, 19,582 specially-abled persons are enrolled under the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, each receiving a monthly pension of ₹2,000.
In a significant policy move, the government has also identified 891 intellectually disabled persons who will benefit from a new pension scheme, entitling them to ₹5,000 per month from October onwards.
Dr. Saha further highlighted that the state disburses 30 different types of social pensions, incurring an annual expenditure of ₹343.52 crore.
The event also saw the felicitation of specially-abled sportspersons, underlining the government’s recognition of their achievements.
“This government is not only committed to social security but also to providing opportunities that uphold the dignity and abilities of every individual,” the Chief Minister asserted.
