Regional languages constitute the very identity and inner spirit of a people, and their harmonious integration with Hindi represents the foundational ethos of the contemporary North-East and a defining strength of modern India. This assertion was made by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha while addressing the inaugural session of the Joint Regional Official Language Conference of the Eastern, North-Eastern, and Northern Regions. The event was held at the Indoor Hall of the International Fair Complex in Agartala in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The conference was formally inaugurated by the Union Home Minister. Its primary objective is to reinforce the effective implementation of the Official Language Policy and to encourage the expanded use of Hindi in governmental functioning.
In his address, Dr. Saha observed that hosting the Rajbhasha Conference in Agartala was made possible due to the initiative and support of Amit Shah. On behalf of the Government of Tripura, he extended a cordial welcome to all dignitaries and delegates assembled in the sacred land of Mata Tripura Sundari.
Highlighting the magnitude of the gathering, the Chief Minister noted that flights to Tripura were fully occupied and hotels across the city were booked to capacity, reflecting the significance of the conference. He expressed deep appreciation for the Union Home Minister’s efforts and commended the administrative machinery for its tireless work in organizing the event. He emphasized that the Rajbhasha Sammelan serves as a vital platform for strengthening the use of Hindi across government offices and banking institutions. Awards were also conferred in multiple categories during the ceremony.
Dr. Saha reiterated that regional languages are intrinsic to cultural identity, while the synthesis of Hindi with these languages forms the philosophical core of the North-East and a pillar of India’s national unity. He remarked that Hindi is currently the third most widely spoken language in the world and serves as an effective conduit between the government and the citizenry.
Referring to the global resurgence of Indian languages under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister stated that Indian linguistic heritage has acquired renewed prominence on international platforms such as the United Nations and the G-20 Summit. In this context, he recalled the historic Hindi address delivered at the United Nations by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He further emphasized that the present Central Government has accorded special priority to education in the mother tongue from primary schooling to higher education. In Tripura, he noted, Hindi literature is steadily expanding within academic institutions. He stressed that both Hindi and regional languages must evolve beyond mere instruments of communication and become robust foundations for technology, science, jurisprudence, and administration.
India, he observed, is a nation of profound linguistic diversity. The official language must serve as a bridge that connects rather than divides. Describing Hindi as one of the world’s largest democratic languages, he asserted that it reinforces the principle of unity in diversity. Simultaneously, he emphasized the equal importance of preserving and nurturing indigenous and tribal languages, which constitute the cultural wealth of the nation.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the lexical richness of Hindi, rooted in Sanskrit and endowed with an expansive capacity for the creation of new terminology. Referring to the National Education Policy 2020, he reiterated the emphasis placed on multilingual development and the incorporation of mother tongues as mediums of instruction.
Concluding his remarks, Dr. Saha stated that such conferences would significantly enhance the practical implementation of the official language policy and strengthen institutional training mechanisms. He encouraged visiting delegates to acquaint themselves with Tripura’s rich cultural heritage and expressed his confidence in the overall success of the conference.
The event was attended by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Members of Parliament Rajib Bhattacharya, Biplab Kumar Deb, and Kriti Singh Debbarma, along with senior officials, public representatives, and over 3,000 delegates from various Central Government departments, public sector undertakings, banks, and multiple states across the eastern, north-eastern, and northern regions of the country.
