Manik Saha on Friday asserted that accountability is the bedrock of democracy and must guide the conduct of all public representatives. He was addressing a seminar and workshop titled “Responsibilities and Accountability of Public Representatives towards all Classes of People” at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala.
The Chief Minister described the event as a milestone in strengthening democratic values in the state. Recalling his cordial discussions with former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, he said Naidu had advised him to maintain constant engagement with grassroots workers and to uphold respect for the Opposition.
Emphasising ethical public life, Dr. Saha cautioned elected representatives against relying on manipulation, deceit, or muscle power to secure electoral victories. “People are watching,” he remarked, warning that any attempt to win votes through unfair means amounts to self-deception.
He underscored that accountability must never be compromised and urged representatives to interact with constituents with humility, attentiveness, and a genuine commitment to resolving their concerns.

Listening to the electorate, he stressed, is not optional but fundamental to democratic responsibility, as every citizen derives rights and dignity from the Constitution.
Rejecting the long-standing political culture of ignoring those who did not cast their vote in one’s favour, he made it clear that such divisive practices have no place in Tripura. True leadership, he noted, lies in inclusive governance and universal outreach.
The Chief Minister further stated that for India to emerge as a developed nation, Tripura must advance on the path of comprehensive development. He called upon public representatives to maintain regular contact with their constituencies, safeguard citizens’ rights, and ensure transparent, information-based communication about government initiatives.
Concluding his address, Dr. Saha reminded representatives that public office offers a rare opportunity to serve society and leave behind a legacy that future generations will remember.
