Congress, CPI(M) Office, Rally Targeted as Dharmanagar Turns Violent

Dharmanagar plunged into political turmoil on Wednesday as violent clashes involving the CPI(M), Congress and BJP-backed groups turned the town into a conflict zone. At least a dozen workers from the CPI(M) and Congress sustained injuries, three of them critically, leaving the region on edge.

The chain of events began late Tuesday night after alleged vandalism at the Dharmanagar District Congress office. Anger spilled onto the streets this morning when Congress workers first marched in protest and later blocked the road outside their office. The blockade was lifted only after police promised swift action and arrests.

Minutes later, ABVP activists launched their own blockade at the same spot, demanding the arrest of district Youth Congress leader Jahangir Hossain, accused of attacking ABVP leader Aniket Deb the previous afternoon.

By midday, the situation deteriorated sharply. District Congress president Digbijoy Chakraborty alleged that hundreds of BJP-backed miscreants stormed the Congress office, attacking workers and vandalizing property. One worker was seriously injured and hospitalized. Chakraborty accused the police of remaining mute spectators and questioned the Chief Minister’s silence on repeated attacks against the opposition.

Simultaneously, CPI(M) workers took out a rally towards the District Magistrate’s office and held a street meeting. As a BJP procession from Kalidighi arrived in the same stretch, tempers flared and a violent confrontation ensued. CPI(M) leaders claimed their rally was attacked without provocation. State committee leader Amitava Dutta and district leader Ratan Roy were among those hospitalized with severe injuries.

Senior police officials including SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, Additional SP Komal Debbarma and SP Avinash Rai rushed to the spot, deploying additional forces to restore order.

Local residents slammed the administration for failing to anticipate the unrest, pointing out that despite soaring tensions since Tuesday, police allowed multiple rallies along the same route without restrictions. Eyewitnesses reported miscreants carrying party flags assaulting opposition workers and damaging CPI(M) publicity vehicles while police remained passive.

Fear gripped the town as shops and markets downed shutters, evoking memories of the violent 1990s. No arrests had been made at the time of reporting.

Tripura Pradesh Congress president Asish Kumar Saha termed the attacks “extremely shameful,” especially on Constitution Day. He said the Congress office—considered a sacred space by workers—was desecrated while police looked on, though party members attempted to resist.
