Congress Slams Govt Over Kokborok, Nagar Body

Tripura Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the state government and the ruling coalition, raising concerns over the proposed formation of a Nagar Panchayat in Bishramganj, the Kokborak script controversy, ADC-related land issues, education policy changes and the prevailing law and order situation.

Addressing a press conference, Chakraborty said the Congress is not opposed in principle to the formation of a Nagar Panchayat in Bishramganj. However, given the mixed population and its proximity to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), he argued that a special commission should have been constituted to ensure consensus among all stakeholders.

He alleged “duplicity” by the ruling alliance, claiming that while leaders of Tipra Motha Party opposed the proposed civic body and demanded inclusion of 30 percent ADC area, district authorities maintained that no ADC land falls within the proposed Nagar Panchayat boundaries and that elected representatives had consented during deliberations.

On land and forest rights, Chakraborty accused the Centre of diluting provisions of the Forest Rights Act and curtailing the powers of village committees in ADC areas. He further alleged that relevant committees were dissolved under the present ADC administration, creating scope for arbitrary land transfers. However, he did not furnish specific documents to substantiate these claims.

Kokborak Script & Education Concerns

Referring to the demand for Roman script in Kokborak, Chakraborty said raising the issue during the examination season was misleading students. He cited historical contributions by Daulat Ahmed and Radhamohan Tagore (Devavarman), noting that Kokborak has long been taught in Bengali script. He also referred to a commission led by linguist Pavitra Sarkar, which had recommended that neither Bengali nor Roman script be imposed and that the decision be left to the tribal community.

The Congress leader alleged that despite being in power in the ADC, the concerned party has taken no concrete steps on the script issue. He further claimed that the National Education Policy 2020 and school consolidation in hilly areas have contributed to rising dropout rates.

Law & Order, Press Freedom

Chakraborty also highlighted alleged rifts within the ruling coalition and deterioration in law and order. He accused the police of inaction in cases involving attacks on journalists, threats within court premises, protests outside editors’ residences and national highway blockades.

Calling the press the “fourth pillar” of democracy, he urged unity to safeguard media freedom and appealed to tribal youth and peace-loving citizens to reflect carefully before making future political decisions.

There was no immediate response from the government or the concerned parties regarding the allegations.
