Congress leaders held meetings in 12 states to discuss the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, with Party President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi attending. The party has announced a rally against the SIR at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan in the first week of December.
Today's meetings saw participation from senior leaders, including KC Venugopal, Congress state in-charges, state presidents, Congress Legislature Party leaders, and Congress Working Committee (CWC) members from the respective states.
Kharge stated that Congress would not allow names to be removed from voter lists and criticized the Election Commission, saying, “At a time when public confidence in democratic institutions is waning, the Election Commission’s conduct is deeply disappointing.” He urged the Commission to clarify that it is not working under the BJP’s influence, claiming that the ruling party is attempting to use SIR as a tool to manipulate votes.
Rahul Gandhi emphasized that Congress should challenge the SIR process politically, organizationally, and legally in areas where voter list revisions are ongoing.
Protests against the SIR are gaining momentum in states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, following West Bengal. In Tamil Nadu, BLOs and officials up to the tehsildar level have announced a boycott starting Tuesday, citing excessive workload, shortage of manpower, limited training, and wage issues. Similarly, the Kerala government has approached the Supreme Court seeking a postponement of SIR until after the local body elections, citing logistical difficulties in conducting both simultaneously.
According to the Election Commission, over 501 million forms have been distributed in 12 states and union territories, reaching 98.32% of voters.
Congress has vowed to “expose every attempt to remove genuine voters or include fake voters” as the SIR process continues.
