Congress Won't Let Tripura Another "Manipur": Gaurav Gogoi

Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said on Friday that his party will not allow Tripura, which is facing violence over panchayat elections, to become another Manipur.

A party delegation led by Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gogoi visited the violence-affected areas of the state.

Addressing a press conference at the party's state headquarters in Agartala, he said, "Congress stands firmly with its leaders, workers and people of Tripura in this difficult time. Congress will not bow down to the terror strategy of BJP."

The Congress leader said, "We will apprise the party high command about what we saw in Tripura during our two-day visit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is saying that India is the mother of democracy, but what we saw here is nothing less than the murder of democracy."

Gogoi said that the Congress suspects that there is a conspiracy to make Tripura "another Manipur", but it will not let this happen.

He said, "We will raise the issue of violence, injustice and threat to democracy in Tripura in the upcoming budget session of Parliament."

At the same time, senior Congress MP Tariq Anwar alleged that law and order has collapsed in Tripura. He said, "Constitutional provisions are being ignored with candidates failing to file nominations for panchayat elections."

"We met Governor N Indrasen Reddy and shared our concerns over the violence in the state. We hope the governor will take necessary steps" he said.

Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman said that at least 3,383 party candidates could not file their nominations for the panchayat elections due to the violence. Notable that Panchayat elections will be held in Tripura on August 8
