CP Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s 15th Vice President

NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the 15th Vice President of India, defeating Opposition candidate Justice B. Sudershan Reddy in the polls held on Tuesday.

Radhakrishnan secured 452 first preference votes, surpassing the required majority of 391, while Reddy polled 300 votes, according to Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody. In total, 781 MPs were eligible to vote, but 13 abstained, including members from the BJD, BRS, Shiromani Akali Dal and one independent.

The elections were held between 10 AM and 5 PM, followed by counting in the evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote, alongside senior leaders such as Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, JP Nadda and Kiren Rijiju.

Congratulating him, Home Minister Amit Shah said Radhakrishnan’s grassroots connect and administrative acumen would strengthen parliamentary democracy. PM Modi too lauded his rich legislative and gubernatorial experience, calling him an “inspiring Vice President.”

Radhakrishnan’s election comes nearly two months after former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 citing health reasons.

A soft-spoken RSS veteran, Radhakrishnan earlier served as a two-term MP from Coimbatore during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure and narrowly missed a Union Cabinet berth in 1998. He was seen as a strong, untainted choice for the Vice Presidency and will now assume charge as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
