India is currently ranked second in the world in financial fraud through cyber fraud. Fraudsters are looting thousands of crores of rupees. Naturally, Tripura is also not safe from this terror. So far, people in Tripura have fallen victim to cyber fraud worth Rs 51 crore 49 lakh 33 thousand 303. Today, several facts and figures of cyber fraud were shared with journalists at the Tripura Police Headquarters. A report by Tripura Police said that cyber criminals are getting into the trap of fraud in the name of fake electricity or gas bills and RTO challans. Tripura Police claims that the main challenge in combating such fraud is that criminals are committing such crimes from other states or countries. Not only that, they are targeting common people with the help of innocent people's bank accounts, fake SIM cards, VPNs, AI and deepfakes and are looting huge amounts of money from them. Moreover, in many cases, the affected citizens are filing complaints with the police too late. Due to this, those criminals are able to escape from the reach.
Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar said that the trend of cyber fraud is increasing across the country. In 2023, cyber criminals looted Rs 74.65 crore. This increased to Rs 228.45 crore in 2024. As a result, there is a need to take a strict stand against this crime. If any money is lost due to fraud, then those transactions should be reported immediately by dialing 1930. Also, you can contact the local police station or Agartala Cyber Crime Police Station for further legal action.
