The daring jailbreak at Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura has snowballed into a major security embarrassment for the state administration. Within 24 hours of the sensational escape of six inmates, two fugitives are back in custody while five jail officials face suspension.
Authorities confirmed that Abdul Patta, nabbed on Wednesday evening, and Narayan Chandra Datta, arrested Thursday from Malakar Basti in Dharmanagar, are the first of the escapees to be re-captured. The remaining four—Najim Uddin, Md. Rahim Ali, Sunil Debbarma, and Rosan Ali—remain at large.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when the six prisoners, five undertrials and one convict, overpowered a guard during Durga Puja rituals and fled from the sub-jail premises.
In swift disciplinary action, jailer Dhananjoy Bhattacharya and wardens Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia, and Notan Lodh were suspended for gross negligence.
A massive manhunt has been launched across North Tripura and neighbouring Unakoti districts, with the BSF sealing the Bangladesh border and state police intensifying checks on all routes to Assam and Mizoram.
Officials have vowed to recapture the fugitives at the earliest, calling the operation one of the biggest manhunts in recent Tripura history.
