Dhoni Set for IPL 2026, May Skip Few Matches

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will return for the IPL 2026 season with Chennai Super Kings, even as he turns 45 in July. The CSK management has confirmed his availability, though his participation in every match remains uncertain due to workload management.

According to Press Trust of India (PTI), a senior CSK source stated that Dhoni has clarified his availability for the season, but a call on whether he will feature in all matches will be taken as the tournament progresses.

Sanju Samson Strengthens Wicketkeeping Unit

The arrival of Sanju Samson adds depth to CSK’s wicketkeeping options. Samson is expected to don the gloves in matches where Dhoni is rested. Young keepers Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma are also part of the squad, with Kartik reportedly acquired for ₹14.20 crore and being groomed as a finisher alongside Shivam Dube.

Dhoni, who has been managing persistent knee and back issues, is likely to continue in a specialist finisher’s role. Like last season, he may also be deployed as an Impact Player, focusing on crucial lower-order overs while contributing strategically as a mentor.

Chepauk Connection Remains Strong

Dhoni is expected to feature prominently in CSK’s home fixtures at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk. His emotional bond with Chennai fans remains unparalleled, with chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni!” echoing through the stands whenever he takes the field.

Retirement speculation had intensified last season when his parents attended a CSK match after nearly two decades. His wife, Sakshi Dhoni, and daughter were also present. However, then-CSK coach Stephen Fleming dismissed retirement rumours, stating he had no confirmation from Dhoni.

A Legacy Beyond Numbers

Dhoni made his international debut in 2004 and etched his name in history by leading India to the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup title in 2007 and the ODI World Cup triumph in 2011.

In the IPL, Dhoni holds the record for most matches played (278) and has guided CSK to five titles, including their most recent championship in 2023. He has scored 5,439 runs at an average of 38.30, with 24 half-centuries, along with 47 stumpings and 158 catches.

He remains the only captain in IPL history to record 100 match wins and has captained in a record 226 matches, with 133 victories. Rohit Sharma follows on the list with 158 matches as captain.

Even at 45, Dhoni’s presence continues to define CSK’s identity—whether as a finisher, leader, or enduring symbol of Chennai’s cricketing spirit.
