ECI Orders Special Revision of Assam’s Electoral Roll Ahead of 2026 Assembly Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on November 17 ordered a Special Revision of electoral rolls in Assam, signalling the start of formal preparations for the state’s 2026 Assembly elections.

In an official communication to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the Commission confirmed that January 1, 2026, will be treated as the qualifying date for the revision process. Senior officials noted that this Special Revision is positioned between the annual Special Summary Revision and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)—a move aimed at strengthening the accuracy and completeness of the voter database before the state heads to the polls.

The Special Revision mechanism is expected to tighten scrutiny of entries, eliminate errors, and ensure that new eligible voters are enrolled well ahead of the elections.

Last month, the ECI initiated SIR exercises in Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, and the Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and West Bengal are also scheduled for Assembly elections in 2026, making the revision a critical preparatory step.

For Assam specifically, the Commission is likely to issue a separate notification detailing the modalities of the upcoming Special Intensive Revision.
