"Revolution is taking place in railways under the leadership of the Modi government. An important chapter in the history of the development in Tripura has been written today. The electrification of the 271-km long railway line from Churaibari to Sabroom has been completed."
This was announced by Power Minister of the state Ratan Lal Nath while inaugurating the 132 kV transmission line and 132 kV feeder bay at the Agartala Railway Station Complex on Tuesday.
The Minister recalled that in 1964, the first train reached Dharmanagar in the northern district. After a long gap, Agartala was included in the train service in 2008 and in 2019, the train reached the border town of Sabroom.
He said that in the last seven years, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there has been a massive transformation of the railways. The conversion from meter gauge to broad gauge and the completion of the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link in 2023 are bright proofs of this. At present, a total of 271 km of broad gauge line from Churaibari to Sabroom has come under electrification.
The Minister said that development work of Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat and Dharmanagar stations is also progressing under the 'Amrit Bharat Project'.
He further said that currently 19 important trains are running from Tripura. These include Agartala-Silchar, Tripurasundari, Rajdhani, Jan Shatabdi, Agartala-Guwahati, Garib Rath and Mumbai Special, among others. Besides, four DEMU trains are running daily, carrying about twelve thousand passengers.
Explaining the need for electrification of railways, the minister said, earlier coal engines were used, later diesel engines. But due to the harmful effects on the environment, now emphasis is being placed on electric trains. At present, out of the total 69,500 km of broad gauge lines in the country, 68,600 km have been electrified, which is more than 98.80 percent. Tripura's 271 km railway line is added to this.
The minister claimed that if the central government and NFR want, it is possible to start electric train services now.
Nath also said that no development is possible without electricity. Therefore, initiatives have already been taken in the state to increase the use of solar energy and charging stations are being set up at 45 places.
