Emergency in 1975 Had a Profound Impact On India's Democratic Structure: Tripura CM

Chief Minister of Tripura Professor (Dr) Manik Saha  inaugurated a seminar on 'Past and Prospects of Emergency Provisions in the Constitution of India' at the auditorium of Tripura Judicial Academy in Narsingagarh, Agartala on Monday. The National Law University of the state organized the seminar.

Democracy and basic rights of common people were hit during the emergency in the country. On June 25, 1975, the Central Government under the leadership of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, imposed a state of emergency across the country, which undermined the country's democracy. 

During the Emergency there was a plot to completely change the constitution of the country. As a result, the glorious constitution and legal system of the country was completely endangered. 

The imposition of Emergency in 1975 had a profound impact on the country's democratic structure and civil rights. The then central government denied all the democratic values ​​of the country in order to retain the ruling power. 

During the state of emergency, many leaders and activists including the top leaders of the opposition parties were imprisoned in false cases without trial by the then government. 

Media is the fourth pillar of democracy. But strict controls were also imposed on the press during the Emergency. As a result, the way of independent opinion propagation of the people including the opposition parties was closed
