FIDE Candidates Tournament 2025 to Be Held in Cyprus

The FIDE Candidates Tournament — the most prestigious event in the current World Chess Championship cycle — will take place in Cyprus from March 28 to April 16, 2025.

Marking 75 years since its inception in 1950, this edition will feature two parallel events: the FIDE Candidates Tournament (Open) and the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament. Both will follow a double round-robin format, comprising 14 rounds.

A total of eight players will qualify for each tournament through a merit-based system that includes the FIDE World Cup 2025, the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2025, and the FIDE Circuit. For the Women’s event, the Women’s Grand Prix also serves as a qualification path.

Additionally, the top three players from the ongoing Chess World Cup in Goa will secure their places in the Candidates Tournament.
