Interim government chief of Bangladesh Mohammad Yunus has praised students who led protests against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
"There is no doubt about it... the whole government collapsed because of the student-led revolution..." Yunus told reporters after meeting students on Sunday night.
"I told (the students), I respect you... I admire you. What you have done is absolutely unique... and because you have ordered me to do this (take charge of the interim administration), I accept it..." he said, recalling part of his conversation with the students.
Two student protesters – Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmood – are part of the 16-member advisory council that was sworn in along with Yunus, who, 84, won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in microfinance and founding the Grameen Bank, which works for community development.
Yunus also stressed that the resignations of high-ranking public officials, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the head of Bangladesh's central bank, were taken 'legally'.
Earlier it was being reported that those officials were issued an ultimatum to step down. Referring to Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, Yunus also said that "finally, the cruel ruler is gone."
He told the students, “They want a new court. So they went there and asked the Chief Justice to resign and pressurised him to resign.” Yunus said, “I am sure they will find a legal way to justify all this because legally… all the rules were followed.”
